Local pests
New York runs from the Atlantic shore of Long Island and the dense blocks of New York City to the Hudson Valley, the Adirondacks and the Great Lakes snowbelt. Cold winters drive rodents and other pests indoors, older buildings give them plenty of gaps, and humid summers keep ticks and stinging insects busy.

Blacklegged ticks can spread Lyme disease, and cases are especially common on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley. They are active spring through fall in tall grass, leaf litter and wooded edges.

House mice and Norway rats move indoors as temperatures drop in fall. Older homes and tightly packed city blocks give them gaps, food and shelter all year.

German cockroaches breed in kitchens and bathrooms. Larger American cockroaches — often called waterbugs in New York — come up from basements, drains and sewers.

Bed bugs hitchhike in luggage, used furniture and through shared walls, so they turn up in homes, apartments and hotels across New York. They are not a sign of a dirty home.

Large black carpenter ants nest in damp or decaying wood, from porches to window frames. Winged ants indoors in late winter or spring can point to a nest inside the house.

House spiders build webs in corners, basements and garages, while wolf spiders hunt on the ground and often wander in during fall. Most New York spiders are harmless to people.
Pest seasons
Timing shifts by a few weeks from the milder coast of Long Island and New York City to the colder Adirondacks and Upstate snowbelt, but most of New York follows this pattern.
Tip: Keep mulch, firewood and soil away from your siding and fix leaks — termites and carpenter ants both need damp wood.
Tip: Check yourself, kids and pets for ticks after time outdoors, and tip out standing water every week.
Tip: Seal gaps around doors, pipes and vents before the first frost — mice can squeeze through very small openings.
Tip: Store food in sealed containers, keep firewood outside and fix drips under sinks — indoor pests need food, water and warmth.

FAQ
Across New York, homeowners and renters most often deal with mice and rats, German and American cockroaches, bed bugs, carpenter ants, spiders and deer ticks. Cold winters push rodents and other pests indoors, and older buildings with shared walls make it easier for pests to move between homes. On Long Island and in the Hudson Valley, ticks are a major outdoor concern from spring through fall. Browse The Pest Library to identify what you’re seeing.
Eastern subterranean termites, the main termite in New York, usually swarm in spring, often on a warm day after rain. They are found in much of the state and are most common downstate, including Long Island, New York City and the Lower Hudson Valley. Swarms are only the visible part: colonies feed on wood out of sight all year. Winged insects or piles of shed wings indoors are a good reason to get an inspection, since termite and carpenter ant swarmers are easy to confuse.
Prices depend on the pest, the size of your home and how far the problem has spread, so the only reliable number is a local quote. As a rough national average, a one-time general pest visit often costs about $100–$300, and termite treatment commonly runs from several hundred to a few thousand dollars. Blacklegged ticks, often called deer ticks, can spread Lyme disease, and some also carry anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Lyme disease is common in New York, especially on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley. Check yourself, children and pets after time outdoors, and remove attached ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers. If you get a rash, fever or flu-like symptoms after a tick bite, see a doctor.
